Photo of the Bama Theatre

The Bama Theatre opened on April 12, 1938, as one of the last movie palaces built in the South. Located on the corner of 6th Street and Greensboro Avenue, the building was originally constructed in 1937 as a combination City Hall & Auditorium.  The theatre's architecture is a mixture of Art Deco and the lavish "atmospheric" styles popular in the 1920s.  In 1976 the Bama Theatre was converted into a performing arts center and was completely renovated for live theatrical use.  The Performing Arts Center is a cooperation of the Arts Council of Tuscaloosa and the Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority.
